The investigation initially sought to identify ultimate beneficial ownership (UBO) information for a company located in an Emirati free zone, in order to identify any commercial links with a potentially related Russian company. Praetorian quickly and discretely began local enquiries to obtain the relevant UBO records from a challenging jurisdiction. At the same time, a wider multi-lingual investigation of both companies and their senior management was carried out across a variety of datasets and investigative platforms. Although local enquiries and UBO records did not indicate any specific sanctions risk, the concurrent technical investigation highlighted senior management links with the Russian company and attempts to obfuscate these relationships. This case highlighted the importance of holistic, all-source research into potential compliance risk that extends beyond simple UBO checks. In this instance, Praetorian’s investigative capability and unique data accesses enabled the client to fully understand the potential risks from their counterparty.
